Job Title:  Maintenance Electrician I

Department:  Electrical

Reports To:  Electric Supervisor

FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

Wage Scale Designation:  WG-26

Under the general supervision of the Electric Supervisor, this position is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical equipment, metering equipment, control systems, and related systems in Utility facilities.

  Typical Duties and Responsibilities

1. Programs, installs, maintains, and tests single and polyphase electric meters and other associated metering equipment.
2. Assists with the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and verification of the AMI system and related communications infrastructure. 
3. Maintains meter testing and calibration routine. 
4. Track meter records and coordinates information with the Billing Department.
5. Programs, installs and wires Microprocessor based control devices in Utility facilities.
6. Assists with SCADA hardware and software upgrades, repairs and maintenance.
7. Maintains the electrical equipment and systems located in the Utility Building, electrical system, water and wastewater plants, lift stations and well houses.
8. Performs all necessary wiring to connect single and three phase motors, relays, contactors and thermostats.
9. Checks, repairs and maintains motor control circuits, heating units, alarm circuits, switches, outlets, generators, lights in Utility facilities working with one and three phase, AC and DC circuits.
10. Maintains and repairs signal light systems and controls. 
11. Performs duties in a manner consistent with safe practices. 
12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 

Education and/or Experience

1. High School Diploma or G.E.D.
2. Associate degree in electrical technology or related field or an acceptable combination of training and experience in electrical maintenance, electrical wiring electrical systems, and electric construction.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

1. Thorough knowledge of electrical theory and mechanical applications.
2. Knowledge of electrical equipment and systems. 

Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics.

Language Skills

1. Ability to read and comprehend simple to complex instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
2. Ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally.

  Certification, Testing and Examination

1. Possession of a valid driver’s license.
2. Must possess a valid South Dakota Class A CDL with air brakes license or obtain it within 180 days of hire.
3. Must have a valid South Dakota Journeyman Electricians license. 
4. Other such testing as deemed necessary by Brookings Municipal Utilities / Swiftel.

3. Required to actively listen and communicate with supervisor, peers and customers.
4. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, distance vision and peripheral vision.
5. Possess excellent eye/hand coordination.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position. 

1. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently in an indoor office environment with occasional exposure to outside weather conditions.
2. Normal indoor conditions of heat, humidity and dust.
3. Position involves regular contact with other employees and members of the public.
4. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal with occasional exposure to loud noise levels.
